Go nuts for Python

Spamalot bid for coconut record

The cast of Monty Python's Spamalot are to lead a world record attempt for the world's largest coconut orchestra.

They hope thousands of fans will gather in London’s Trafalgar Square on St George’s Day to smash the current record of 1,789.

That record is held by New Yorkers, who celebrated the first anniversary of the show’s Broadway run in March last year by gathering outside the Shubert Theater.

Would-be record-breakers this time around must register at 6.30pm to receive their free coconuts. The official record attempt takes place half an hour later, followed by an al fresco screening of Monty Python And The Holy Grail at 19:30.

The Python team famously banged coconuts together to represent horses in the original movie, because the budget wouldn’t stretch to the real thing – but it has now become a trademark of both the film and Eric Idle’s musical.
