Dawn to make opera debut

Dawn French is to star in an opera at Covent Garden.

The comic has already begun rehearsals for her role in Donizetti’s La Fille du Regiment, which opens at the Royal Opera House on January 11.

She plays La Duchesse de Crackentorp in the production - a non-singing role – alongside such virtuoso singers asFrench soprano Natalie Dessay and Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez.

La Fille du Regiment premiered at Covent Garden in 1861 and was last performed in 1967 in a production featuring Luciano Pavarotti.

The French comedy tells the story of the beautiful Marie who, as a baby, is found on a battlefield and adopted by a regiment of soldiers.
