Balloon goes up

Second series for Dee sitcom

The BBC has ordered a second series of Jack Dee’s comedy Lead Balloon.

The show in which Dee plays world-weary comic Rick Spleen, earned digital channel BBC Four its highest audience for a comedy show when it debuted – a ratings performance that was deemed so successful that it transferred to BBC Two after just three weeks.

Now a second run has been ordered – of eight episodes rather than the six in series one – and it will go out on BBC Two first.

Filming has been scheduled for the spring and the series will air later in the year, with the possibility of repeats on BBC Four, trade magazine Broadcast reports.

The first episode of Lead Balloon pulled in 383,000 viewers to BBC Four, with ratings of around 2.3million – about par for its timeslot – when it transferred to BBC Two.
