Morrissey to front TV improv show

Neil Morrissey has been lined up to star in a new improvised comedy for channel Five.

He will be ‘the voice of God’, directing a cast of five comic actors, giving them instructions over earpieces as they act out scenes in a sitcom.

Actors’ newspaper The Stage reports that Morrissey is to star in a pilot to be made in front of a live audience.

However, the future of Five’s comedy output is current uncertain, as the channel awaits the arrival of new managing director of content, Lisa Opie

The show is based on hit German series Schillerstrasse, the format of which has been syndicated around the world.

Each episode of the show – a studio-based sitcom like Friends or My Family - has a rough narrative, which changes with the director’s instructions.

Five’s comedy controller Graham Smith has previously explained: ‘ For example, if the story was for an actor to change a light bulb, then as they mount the stepladder the director informs them that they have vertigo. The audience hears this but the other actors don’t.’
