What would Bill say?

New book of wannabe writing

A new book is to be published of things Bill Hicks might possibly have said, were he alive today.

Publishers are inviting  any Hicks wannabe to submit a 250-word routine the late stand-up might have performed to publish next year.

The rules say: “Talk about politics or drugs or smoking or crappy celebrities or an update on the People Who Hate People party... whatever, just capture the essence of Bill Hicks.”

But they are even open to suggestions from people who “don’t like to use words” – who can send a homage to Hicks in pictures.

The entries are being collected on a website www.whatwouldbillhickssay.com – with a book of the top 100 due for publication next year.

Royalties will be split 50:50 between the contributors and the Bill Hicks Foundation For Wildlife, the charity set up in his names.

Ben Mack, producer of the project, said: “Ten years after Bill Hicks passed away, his humor about President Bush and The Iraq War is ironically relevant. Bill Hicks was famous in England, Ireland and Canada, but not in The United States.

“We are hoping to build awareness and appreciation of one of America’s finest comedic voices.”

And Amelia Smith,  who created the website, said: “ I’m hoping that through these contests we can spread a little of Bill Hicks’ soul to a greater audience.”
