Kay replaces Aherne on new sitcom

Peter Kay is set to replace Caroline Aherne on the BBC sitcom she walked out on.

The Phoenix Nights stars will reportedly step in to help Aherne's long-term writing partner Craig Cash write the pub-based comedy Early Doors.

Kay could also appear in front of the cameras when the show is filmed in the spring.

Caroline quit the show last month after a furious row over the script with Craig, who plays husband Dave in her hit The Royle Family.

One insider told the Sunday Mirror: "Peter's and Craig's brand of humour is very similar. This may be the start of a long-term collaboration. "
