Victim of throat cancer at 58

Dundee-based comedian George Duffus has died of throat cancer.

The 58-year-old had surgery last week in the city's Ninewells Hospital, but remained ill and died yesterday.

Although a familiar face on the Scottish after-dinner circuit, Duffus's fame did not spread south of the border.

He appeared on several Scottish TV shows, and his one-off special It's George was shown nationally on Channel 4 in 1983.

Duffus was a Robbie Burns fanatic and, according to the Daily Record, had to cancel 21 Burns Suppers after taking ill
