My top ten comedy Christmas songs
As picked by musical comic Ashley Frieze
I was listening to Mitch Benn’s We Know A Song About That, Don’t We? podcast recently, where he pointed out that his ever-expanding Christmas Album is now over 30 tracks long, with none of them cover versions.
Though you shouldn’t compare, it reminded me that I have released around 50 original comedy Christmas songs over the last couple of years, mainly In Cahoots with the dreaded AI song generating platforms, and so it must be high time we had a list of The Top Ten Comedy Christmas Songs You Should Be Listening To Rather Than Mine:
10. Rob Deering: North Pole Funk
This is a parody song of Uptown Funk, from a Santa-suited Deering. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
9. Tim Minchin: White Wine in the Sun
Sentimental, almost too sweet, but punctured with sharp wit and brilliant playing, this song was part of Minchin’s journey from quirky musical comedy act, to musical theatre legend. Watching this video even raises cash for charity over Christmas.
8. Eric Idle: Fuck Christmas
I only just discovered this, and it’s a brilliantly grumpy song. Even if you love Christmas, we’re culturally programmed to adore this level of misanthropy from the cheeky chops of Eric Idle.
7. Mitch Benn: It’s Christmas Whether You Like It Or Not
Since it set off this train of thought, it’s only fair to include the title song from Mitch Benn’s album. Musically, it ticks off all of the Christmas music cliches, and it’s a song that gives the season a well deserved ribbing, from someone who clearly loves this time of year.
6. Hannah Warman: Merry Christmas (Don’t Be A D)
Hannah is a comedian and brilliant singer, and released this around the time of the Me Too movement. It’s a great reminder that Christmas is a time of kindness, respect, and, most importantly, not being a D.
5. Friz Frizzle: Mistletoasis
Friz is the source of our second parody song in this list - Mistletoasis, from their Bandcamp album Merry Frizmas!
You can also find Friz improvising Christmas songs on some old YouTube streams.
4. The Goons: I’m Walking Backward For Christmas
The era of silly Christmas songs began a long time ago, and we shouldn’t forget some of the progenitors of modern day comedy songs and associated tomfoolery. This 1956 song wouldn’t sound out of place as a Vic and Bob number and, who knows, it may be instrumented on a ukulele to be next year’s John Lewis ad.
3. Duncan Oakley: Greggs Festive Bake
At the other end of the spectrum, we have a song from this year by the adorable master of musical merriment, Duncan Oakley, who’s waiting for a certain food to start his Christmas season.
2. Flo and Joan: Aimless Christmas Dads
An intimate performance that manages to be understated, wry and huge all at once, from these powerhouse sisters. I feel seen.
1. Fascinating Aida’s Christmas Message
This is probably the best Christmas message and the best Christmas song ever, delivered with a delicate brute force. Makes me laugh every time.
The world of comedy’s given us an amazing repertoire of alternative Christmas songs, many of which are more Christmassy than the traditional festive listening. So I’d recommend you listen to the above songs well before any of the stupidity I’ve released… though Tip Trip is a banger:
