A new world record! And we're making it up

Bid for an improv first

A new record for the world's biggest improv team is to be set next month.

But it shouldn’t be too difficult, as there’s no existing record.

Comedy Store Player Neil Mullarkey will be leading the attempt in Barnsley as part of the nationwide London 2012 Festival of arts events coinciding with the Olympics.

Audience members have been told they don’t need any experience of improv – or even have to leave their seats – to take part in the challenge.

They will play the simple ‘yes and...’ game, where they reaffirm the sentence the person before them said, then add another piece of information. For example, one player might say: ‘It’s tough being an astronaut’ and the next might go ‘yes, and especially when we are trapped on the space station’ and the next, ‘yes, and there’s an alien loose aboard the ship..’ and so on.

Mullarkey already has one world record as part of the Comedy Store Players, who are officially part of the world's longest-running comedy troupe with the same core cast, as recognised by Guinness World Records.

World Record Improv! takes part in Barnsley’s Building 21 on August 10.
