Comics join the Bake Off

A tight 5: January 1

Alistair McGowan and Doon Mackichan are among the celebrities taking part in The Great Sport Relief Bake Off this month. Judged by Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, the BBC Two show will run from January 13 to 16. The episodes will also be guest hosted by Omid Djalili, Ed Byrne and Jo Brand alongside regular Sue Perkins.

MICK FERRY has been named Best UK Live Stand-Up of 2013 by fellow comedians. Comic John Moloney polled his peers to create the award because he was disillusioned with the fact the British Comedy Awards has no category recognising live comedy.

DAVID WALLIAMS is to reunite with Sheridan Smith for a new West End version of My Fair Lady. The pair appeared together in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream this year. Dates and venue for the new show have not yet been announced.

GRAHAM NORTON’S New Year’s Eve show – with guests including the cast of Anchorman 2 and Monty Python – attracted 4.76 million viewers to BBC One list night, 200,000 more than last year.

DENISE VAN OUTEN has blamed critics for thwarting her comedy career, after her 1999 sitcom Babes In The Wood was panned. She told The Sun: ‘[They] said I couldn’t act as I was a Big Breakfast host, but some of it was funny.’ She added that she was still hopeful of a comedy career, possibly a ‘Birds of a Feather-type thing.’
