Matt Klein: Boyoyoyoyoing
Edinburgh Fringe comedy review
On getting engaged, a dancer in a sleazy club vows to become the best stepmom she can be… until a dutiful drive to hockey practice turns into a Tarantinoesque orgy of blood-soaked gun violence.
Such is the premise of Matt Klein’s playful late-night clown show in the bowels of Banshee Labyrinth, full of over-the-top nonsense but performed with vulnerable likeability and a (relatively) controlled performance.
Recruiting a stepson from the audience keeps things free-flowing, although tight cues – also operated by Klein – reveal that a more practised routine lies beneath the chaos. But there’s enough improv that brought half of the row in front of me back for a return visit to see how the mayhem played out second time around.
Your enjoyment will depend on your tolerance for increasingly preposterous mimed scenarios as the body count and the melodrama rack up, but Klein brings a humanity to his committed performance as a wayward soul determined to do the right thing by her newfound family.
Boyoyoyoyoing is as dumb as it is fun – the title just might have given an indication of that – and the late slot suits the sort of show you need to let just happen to you, rather than examining it too deeply. Klein seems to be having a whale of a time with this robust Fringe debut, and that’s infectious.
