Edinburgh Fringe comedy review

Filthy-mouthed song parodist Kunt is not at the Fringe this year, but he is still getting laughs here. One of the pre-show slides at Depths of Wikipedia is a screen grab of the online encyclopedia's category of ‘songs banned by the BBC’, featuring his hit Boris Johnson Is A Fucking Cunt, closely followed by his other hit Boris Johnson Is Still A Fucking Cunt.

There’s endless fun to be had in the repository of every bit of human knowledge ever, of course, almost all of it more wholesome than that, such as the planet’s only known fourth-order recursive island: an island in a lake, on an island, in a lake, on an island, in a lake. Needless to say, QI fans will love this.

Annie Rauwerda runs through a few of these quirky facts, plus – amusingly – some snippets that don’t reveal the topic. No one, for example, will want a whole subheading in their biography that reads ‘nipple fixation’.

She shares many of these titbits on her social media channels, also called Depths Of Wikipedia. So the live show is expanded into a love letter to the project. Here she mainly shares her passion for how the site works, with its huge army of volunteer editors (herself included) getting into debates about Garfield’s gender or fighting off vandals. 

It is this unlikely collaborative human endeavour that has built Wikipedia from modest beginnings (the first entry on Europe is hilarious) into a vast source of knowledge, and bugbear of Elon Musk.

Rauwerda has the breathless, eager delivery of a high school nerd delivering a speech, with little variation in cadence or tone. But her enthusiasm still shines through and the subject matter provides enough quirky information to keep you hooked, while serving as a reminder of what an impressive monument to selfless human collaboration Wikipedia is.
