Aliens Ate My Schnitzel!

Oh dear. This was bad. And judging by the exodus of half of the audience and the overheard verdict of one woman who did sit through it as ‘heinous,’ I wasn’t the only one who held this opinion.

As the title – also the name of the duo themselves – suggests, the intention here is to be zany, but chucking out random notions proves not as easy as it looks. Most of the skits are badly written and lacking punchlines, and sometimes slips into the downright offensive, such as the ‘charitable’ hairdressers who want to send hair straighteners to Africa.

In this context other ‘foreign’ characters such as folk duo Folkin 'ell, where one translates for the other, and a seedy Eurodisco duo appear xenophobic, executed without warmth or much humour.

Occasionally the pair arrive at a good idea - an electrocution lottery draw, a guru who needs re-homing and their carefully filmed intro and outro involving a Wendy house and the duo in their pants (their films and music are at least professionally put together) - but they’re lost amid the weak material and distasteful ideas that pervade some of the sketches.

Overall, the effect is mean-spirited and distinctly light on laughs.
