One Hundred Per Cent Sex Therapy

Review by Steve Bennett

In this show, or seminar, Dr Hank Wangford, the well-known country singer, sexual health expert and Spoonerism, explores the tired old comedy stand-by of sexual disappointment.

With no other technology than the trusty old flipchart, The Good Doctor encouraged the relatively youthful audience to get involved by humming their approval or disapproval of his themes.

Unrealistically high expectations by women and disastrously low expectations from men were explored, as were Freudian theories and the idea that 'men are like toilets - either occupied or full of shit' (which is probably not one of Freud's).

Wangfrod separated the audience into girls on one side of the room, boys on the other as he lectured graphically about the size of the penis, how women should masturbate, anal sex and blow-jobs. The audience shifted uncomfortably; with the doctor looking halfway between Val Doonican and a lovely uncle, it felt like watching your parents having sex.

A re-enactment of that orgasm scene from When Harry Met Sally was upstaged by one punter fainting (appropriately enough), but those of us who remained conscious couldn't shake that nagging feeling of unease.

Still, the audience was laughing, but they could well have been faking it in an attempt to get the unpleasantness over with.
