Mike Belgrave – Original Review

Note: This review is from 2004

Review by Steve Bennett

Belgrave has a nice line in observational comedy, but his game is raised considerably by a natural but animated patter that puts any audience in a good mood.

He's sometimes tempted to use his strong performance skills for some blatant playing to the gallery, but mostly it's his easygoing manner than wins people over rather than any unsubtle manipulation.

The quality of the material may not yet be up to the quality of the delivery, though a couple of routines do shine - most notibly the way he subverts an anecdote about Christmas with his Irish and West Indian relatives just as it seems we were straying into familiar territory.

The writing may still need work, but Belgrave has established himself as a reliably entertaining act, which is a good basis to build from.
