Helen Austin – Original Review

Note: This review is from 2002

Review by Steve Bennett

A sickeningly talented singer and musician, Austin is an enjoyable act, if not as sharp with her material - rude rewrites of popular songs - as she could be.

The fact her opener is based on Sade's 1984 hit Smooth Operator certainly dates the material in terms of style - back then the mere mention of vibrators and thrush was a sure-fire winner - but surely we've moved on.

And playing the same three songs every night for the past decade can take its toll on the performance, and she sometimes appears as if she's going through the motions, rather than actually enjoying herself.

Having said that, she has a fantastic voice and her material can raise plenty of laughs from an up-for it audience.
