Roy Diamond – Original Review

Note: This review is from 2001

Review by Steve Bennett

The creation of youngish comic Marcus Powell, Diamond is an almost geriatric Caribbean entertainer. And some of the gags are older than the character.

The strength, though, is in the performance. Powell brings a lot of charm and warmth to his character, which means you cant help liking him, even if the material is a tad predictable.

Such affectionate caricatures are already the domain of Lenny Henry, of course. And while Powell is fit to be mentioned in the same paragraph as the more famous comic, it's hard to see how he can do anything more interesting with this enjoyable, but unexceptional, character.
