Brett Goldstein: I didn't even tell my mum I was going to be Hercules
Brett Goldstein has spoken about how he kept his casting as Hercules in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so secret, he couldn’t even tell his mum.
The comic and Ted Lasso star was unveiled as the buff hero in a post-credits scene in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder when it was released earlier this month.
In it, Zeus (Russell Crowe) reflects on defeat at the hands of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) – then sends his son, Hercules, to seek vengeance. Goldstein has just two words: ‘Yes, father.’
At a Ted Lasso event this week, Goldstein told Hollywood trade website Variety that he sent his parents to see the Thor sequel without telling them of his cameo.
‘I didn’t tell anyone because Marvel put a chip in my neck that said "If you talk about this you’re dead,’" he joked.
His parents are not fans of superhero movies but he persuaded them to see the Thor movie ‘because it’s funny.’
‘My mum is texting me all the way through the film giving me a running commentary,’ Goldstein added. ‘It gets to the end bit, where it shows Russell Crowe… My mum texts me "Russell Crowe’s in it again, he’s very funny." I go, "Fucking look up at the screen!"’
Goldstein says he has no idea what will happen with his Hercules, adding: ‘I truly, honestly — this isn’t me lying or being coy — I know nothing All I know is what I did that day and that’s it. That could be it. It was a fun three seconds.’
