Jo Brand: How I escaped a drink-drive rap

Confession on Mel Giedroyc's Unforgivable

comedyJo Brand has revealed that she was once caught drink-driving… but the police let her off because she was a nurse.

The comic said she went for a boozy session with some pals after a tough day at work.

But on the way home she drove through red traffic lights, which attracted the attention of a squad car.

‘Because I was quite drunk – sorry about this, don’t drink and drive – I drove to [the flats] where I lived and for a laugh to entertain my friends, I drove on to the ornamental gardens and went round and round the fountain going "woo hoo".’

Speaking to Mel Giedroyc on her Dave show Unforgivable, Brand said the cop patiently watched her antics before approaching the car.

‘This policeman came over and said, "Have you been drinking, madam?", she said. ‘And I said, apparently, "I should say so, big boy".’

But after friend pleaded for leniency on her behalf because of her stressful job in the NHS, the officer let her off.

‘He said to me, "Get in your flat before I change my mind",’ Brand added.
