Rhod Gilbert: I was too shy to check into a hotel room
Rhod Gilbert once slept in the street because he was too crippled by shyness to check into the hotel he’d booked
He told The Andy Jaye podcast: ‘I was too shy to check into the hotel I’d booked, so I just slept outside. It was warm, it was all right.’
The comic previously told a version of the hotel story on Would I Lie To You?, but omitted the part about being too shy because ‘it was all a bit bleak’.
He made a BBC documentary about his shyness in 2018, but told the podcast ‘I can’t really explain the contradiction,’ between being able to talk to a huge audience on stage and being withdrawn elsewhere in life.
‘We are funny things, aren’t we, people?’ he said. ‘I am a strange little thing.’
‘Don’t get me wrong, I am nervous as hell when I’m doing it. Absolutely having kittens. It’s not like I’m walking out there comfortably.
‘But you would have though that the person who can walk out in front of thousands of people could afterwards walk into a pub and have a pint on his own. But no chance.’
