Andrew Doherty picks his comedy favourites
Andrew Doherty – who is back at the Edinburgh Fringe with his Sad Gay AIDS Play – picks his Perfect Playlist of comedy favourites
Nick Coyle: Queen of Wolves
It’s long been said that without Nick Coyle: Queen of Wolves there’s no Andrew Doherty… anything. A pitch-perfect gothic parody that was both super silly and also genuinely quite frightening, I saw it at Fringe in 2017 and went back three times. Admittedly I had a pass so it was free, but it’s not like there weren’t other things I could have been doing with my time!
[There's no footage of that show online but here's a short Coyle made:]

Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar
This came out during the pandemic and immediately cured Covid. It feels like a film from a bygone age – it’s purely there to tell jokes and be silly. They don’t make em like that any more!
It’s pure stupidity and joyful fun, with some golden moments throughout (Jamie Dornan’s romantic ballad Edgar’s Prayer being a personal favourite.) I feel like in 20 years this will be a cult favourite
A Woman’s Smile
The funniest podcast ever made, Patti Harrison and Lorelei Ramirez turn a discussion on the beauty of womanhood into a bizarre psychosexual horror show.
Come for the theorising on what makes a woman’s smile so special, stay for the frequent knife attacks from the Chucky doll, the passionate defences of landmines and the weird number of sponsors who use the promocode ‘Sexcrime.’
Scott Turnbull: Where Do All the Dead Pigeons Go?
I saw this bizarre, melancholic odyssey at Summerhall in 2016. I was in the middle of a heart-wrenching breakup of a relationship that had spanned four beautiful days, and this strange story of a man trapped on a space station with a Geordie AI gave me everything I needed. Incredibly funny, endearingly strange, and beautifully moving.
Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace
I never saw Matthew Holness’s original stage shows, because I’m too young. I’m so, so young, and my skin is flawless. But the Channel 4 series is the only thing that makes me wish I was just ever so slightly older, so I could have witnessed it in person. If you’ve seen it, you already know it’s perfect. If you haven’t, watch it now.
The Federal member for the North Queensland seat of Kennedy, Bob Katter, explaining why he doesn’t really care about the same-sex marriage debate
Just watch this masterpiece. ‘Let there be a thousand blossoms bloom’ is so joyful and whimsical. His voice is so light and floaty. This man could never experience any negative emotion ever. And then it happens. Before our eyes he becomes a new man. Bob Katter is the greatest character comedian of all time.
