As Christmas Carol adaptation heads to Salford

John Thomson is to play Ebenezer Scrooge in a production of A Christmas Carol at the Salford Lowry this Christmas.

Directed by Matthew Warchus and adapted for the stage by Jack Thorne, this show has run every year in London, save for Covid-hit 2020, since it debuted at The Old Vic in 2017. But this is its first run outside the capital.

Warchus  said: ‘John is a wonderful performer, who many will know from delighting us on screen, and I can’t wait to see him deliver this extraordinary and beloved character.’

And  Thomson himself said: ‘It’s an absolute honour to have been cast… I’m looking forward to entertaining everyone at the Lowry with my interpretation this coming Christmas.’

Scrooge has previously been played by Rhys Ifans, Stephen Tompkinson, Stephen Mangan, Owen Teale, Christopher Eccleston, John Simm and Paul Hilton in this version of the Charles Dickens story.

It will play at The Lowry, Salford, from December 11 to January 10.
