Free Fringe announces a venue just for newbies
Short runs, away from the main drag
The PBH Free Fringe is running a venue just for performers making their Edinburgh debuts this year.
Most of the 20 shows being staged at Pizza Geeks on Easter Road will run for just a week – while comedian Steve McLean, pictured, will be on hand to mentor the acts.
He said: 'I'm very proud to be part of this venture. I remember what it's like being a first-timer. When I did my first run, I was the only new act in my venue and I felt a little intimidated by everything.
‘So I hope all the new acts will form a bond. It'll be lovely to see everyone get behind each other. I think it's going to be great.'
Located near Hibernian’s Easter Road ground, the venue is also away from the main Fringe Old Town hubs, with Free Fringe saying they hope it brings the festival to locals who often feel excluded from it.
McLean, who also runs the West End New Act Of The Year competition in London, added: ‘As far as we know, this project is the first of its kind. We would actively encourage other fringe providers to follow our lead in future and we hope it helps to break a glass ceiling or two.’
