Edinburgh Fringe to revamp its 'garbage' website

Festival society works on a 'suite of digital solutions'

The Edinburgh Fringe is to get a much-needed new website – in 2027.

The society that coordinates the festival has appointed Edinburgh-based digital consultancy Storm ID to develop a new site.

Some visitors to this year’s event criticised the website’s limited search functions and unnecessary clicks to find what dates a show was one. Writing on Reddit, one fringe-goer said: ‘It really is just crap. They've gutted the search function, reduced categories etc’ another called it: ‘Absolutely garbage’.

Tony Lankester, chief executive of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, said: ‘We know audiences love the live Fringe experience, and we work to ensure they have a range of innovative tools to help them discover the programme, pick shows and plan their Fringe seamlessly and efficiently.

‘The announcement of Storm ID as our newest partner is driven by our hunger to meet those needs with a world-class digital experience. Storm ID share this hunger, and our commitments to sustainability and accessibility.  They are the perfect partners to help us research, develop and deliver the best suite of digital solutions for our Fringe community.’

According to its website, the company has previously worked with the Foreign Office, the NHS, the Scottish Government and CalMac ferries.

Managing director Linsey Lydon said: ‘As an Edinburgh-based company, we know how much the Fringe means to people.

‘Drawing on our long-standing experience in the cultural sector, and with a strong track record of delivering platforms that perform at scale, we’ll build a website for the Fringe that’s not only robust but clever too.

‘Our experience in innovative search will be a real game-changer, helping audiences navigate the thousands of shows on offer to find their perfect performance.’
