'It's a love letter to the scene'

Three comedians are making a documentary celebrating the grassroots stand-up circuit.

Gone Gigging will follow April Louise, Big Shaun and Calum Scouller as they travel across the UK performing in comedy clubs, pub back rooms, arts centres and community venues.

It will be narrated by comedian and broadcaster Toby Foster, and feature interviews with those who keep the circuit alive, as well as revealing the reality of life on the road.

April Louise told Chortle: ‘For the three of us, comedy has been about far more than getting laughs. We’ve all experienced our own mental health struggles and grassroots comedy gave us something we didn’t realise we needed: friendship, purpose and a community. 

‘We want to celebrate the incredible promoters, venues, comedians and audiences who keep that community alive, while asking what happens if we lose these spaces. This documentary is a love letter to the grassroots comedy scene and the people who make it possible.’

In keeping with the grassroots ethos, Gone Gigging is a DIY project with the comedians shooting their own footage, and with no production company involved.

The stand-ups – who are all based in South Yorkshire – have already started filming across the UK.
