Reg Varney's memorabilia under the hammer
Including his script for the 1971 On The Buses movie
Memorabilia from On The Buses star Reg Varney is going under the hammer.
The collection includes his bound copy of the script for the 1971 spin-off movie, which has an estimate of £200 to £300.
‘It’s a very special item,’ says auctioneer Andrew Stowe from Bristol-based auctioneers Auctioneum.’ The movie was a surprise success, and actually out-performed that year’s James Bond outing, Diamonds Are Forever! To be able to offer Varney’s personal script is a rare treat.’
Also going under the hammer are some of Varney’s professional accolades, including his solid silver ITV Personality of the Year award.
’By the time Reg appeared in On The Buses, he was already a well known star of stage and screen, having performed extensively in variety and theatre for much of his early career,’ Stowe adds. ‘In the 1960s he became a household name appearing as Reg inThe Rag Trade.’
The earliest item up for grabs is a never-before-seen photograph of Varney taken during his service with the Royal and Mechanical Engineers during the Second World War, when he would often entertain his fellow soldiers with songs on the piano.
‘This is a fantastic collection that truly captures the life and career of a British comedy legend,’ says Stowe. ‘Varney was a household name for decades, and this is a must-see for anyone interested in the golden age of British comedy.’
The Reg Varney estate collection will be sold as part of Auctioneum’s timed online British Comedy Auction, running until December 10.
The actor died in November 2008 aged 92, while episodes of On The Buses are streaming on ITVX.
