Granville's back!
Sir David Jason to reprise role for 50th anniversary retrospective
Sir David Jason is to play shopkeeper Granville for one last time.
The actor has recorded a new scene for an Open All Hours retrospective, penned by the sitcom’s original writer, 95-year-old Roy Clarke.
It shows Granville closing the shop for the night while offering a ‘touching glimpse into how his life has moved on’ since we last saw him.
Sir David, 85, played the character across 67 episodes – four series as an errand-boy in the original sitcom which ran from 1976 to 1985, and six series as the store owner in Still Open All Hours, which ran from 2013 to 2019.
He is reprising the role for a 90-minute special Open All Hours: Inside Out, to air on U&Gold next year to mark the 50th anniversary of the comedy.
The broadcaster says Sir David will discuss his ‘personal journey’ on the show, revealing behind-the-scenes moments and some of his fondest memories.
He said: ‘It’s so good to be back! I played Granville for over half my life and so this show holds a very special place in my heart. There are countless memories and stories about this show, and I am thrilled to be able to share those with everyone.’
Sir David will also be joined by some of his fellow cast members in the show, which is in production now.
UKTV’s head of programming, Gerald Casey said: ‘Open All Hours is a classic, and part of our DNA here at U&Gold. We are thrilled to be able to give viewers more of what they love with Sir David Jason lifting the lid on some of his fondest memories on set alongside fellow cast members.’
It is being made by the production company Studio Crook, which previously made Hancock – Very Nearly An Armful and Bottom Exposed for the channel.
Managing director Matt Crook said: ‘We are very excited to be working with UKTV once again and on one of my all-time favourite sitcoms. Open All Hours is a perfectly crafted show and we are working closely with the brilliant Roy Clarke and Sir David Jason to bring you a few new surprises.’
The show is being directed by Paul Young and produced by Adam McLean.
