Curtain comes down on Staged

No more series of David Tennant and Michael Sheen comedy

David Tennant and Michael Sheen comedy Staged has ended after three series.

The stars reckon the show – which was created during lockdown – has no place in today’s world.

Tennant told The Sun: ‘We’ve had a wonderful time filming the series but have no plans to do more.

‘It was a show born out of a particular period of time – lockdown – when we were all in our houses communicating via Zoom, as our characters did in the show.

‘We couldn’t get out. Now, as the characters demonstrate in some of the scenes in the new series, we can.’

In the first two series of Staged, the actors and their partners –  Georgia Tennant and Anna Lundberg  – played fictional versions of themselves working on a Zoom project when their stage work was derailed.

Series three, now being screened on BBC One having previously streamed on Britbox last November, sees writer and director Simon Evans trying to reunite the pair on a post-Covid project.

The series has featured A-list cameos including Dame Judi Dench, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Palin  Cate Blanchett, Whoopi Goldberg and Olivia Colman.

Tennant is returning to Doctor Who later this year while Sheen can currently be seen opposite Sharon Horgan in the harrowing BBC drama Best Interests.

Tennant and Sheen also both co-star in Amazon’s Good Omens, which returns to Prime Video for a second series on July 28.
