Baby Done to hit cinemas next year

Rose Matafeo’s movie Baby Done is to be released in the UK and Ireland on January 22, it has been announced today.

In her first big-screen starring role, the comedian plays Zoe, a young woman who discovers she's pregnant. But, acting in denial, seh tries to do live a wild single life before the baby arrives.

Matthew Lewis plays her long-term boyfriend Tim, taking a more responsible approach to pregnancy.

Filmed in her native New Zealand, he semi-autobiographical story was written by Sophie Henderson, directed by her husband, Curtis Vowell and executive-produced by Jojo Rabbit's Taika Waititi.

When the romcom was announced last year, Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Matafeo said: ‘I’m super excited to be in a legit movie. I failed NCEA level 3 drama, so this is a big win for me 

‘I’ve known and admired Sophie and Curtis since I was a little teen fan of the Auckland creative scene and it’s a dream to be working with them, plus it’s so nice to have to an excuse to come back to New Zealand so I can open all the mail my Nan has been saving for me.’ 

Matafeo previously had a smaller role in Waititi’s film The Breaker Upperers which also starred comic Celia Pacquola. 

She is currently writing a second series of her BBC and HBO Max sitcom Starstruck, although the first has yet to air becasue filming was halted by the pandemic.

Baby Done will play in cinemas and streamed on digital platforms from the release date. Here's the trailer:
