Fringe newcomers get £500 each

Janine Harouni and Helen Bauer have each won £500 toward the cost of their debut Edinburgh shows thanks to London’s 99 Club.

The pair won the annual bursaries for female and non-binary performers at a showcase gig last night.

New Yorker Harouni won the Laughing Horse New Act Of The Year competition last year and is part of sketch trio Muriel.

Bauer made the finals of the BBC New Comedy Award last year and was also part of the Pleasance Comedy Reserve at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe.

The other finalists last night all received £150. They are Yuriko Kotani, the Japanese comedian who won the BBC New Comedy award in 2016; Sophie Duker, who has piloted a Channel 4 show called Riot Girls and a Comedy Central show called What I Wish I’d Said; and Canadian stand-up Emily Woods.
