...in new Eric and Ernie drama

Victoria Wood is to star in a TV drama about the early years of Morecambe and Wise, playing Eric Morecambe's mother Sadie.

The BBC biography will revolve around the duo's years as child stars, encouraged by the pushy-but-supportive Sadie, who had a clear vision for her son's success.

It is being written by Peter Bowker, whose credits include the TV series Occupation and Blackpool, but has not yet been given a tile or a broadcast date. Nor have the young Eric and Ernie been cast.

The drama was announced by BBC Two controller Janice Hadlow, who said: 'Strongly authored drama are absolutely key to the creation of BBC Two’s confident new voice.'

It is being made by production company Blue Door Adventures and BBC Wales.
