The comedy diet

Stand-up weans man off chips and beans

You might not think the diet of most stand-ups is particularly healthy – but a man addicted to eating just beans and chips has tried stand-up to try to beat his cravings.

Tom Ball’s efforts were filmed for the BBC Three show Freaky Eaters, which will air on March 3.

The 26-year-old – who had never set foot in a comedy club before – was given just one hour to prepare for his set, which was designed to build his self-esteem.

Martin Besserman, pictured who runs the Monkey Business club in North London, gave Ball tips on performing, and said he went down well.

He said: ‘Tom was absolutely shocked when told what his challenge entailed, but showed lots of enthusiasm and determination to see it though.

‘The audience really did warm to him as he was able to make some decent humour about his eating habits. Tom could not stop smiling afterwards – he was rather pleased with himself.’
