Rowan tops international box office

Mr Bean’s Holiday was the biggest grossing film in the international box office this weekend.

Rowan Atkinson’s sequel netted $33.3 million outside the US, beating the epic 300 into second place.

It topped the box office charts in 21 of the 24 countries it launched it.

Britain contributed $12.8million to the tally, and it was also the top launch in Germany and Australia.

David Kosse, from distributor Universal Picture, topper, told Hollywood bible Daily Variety the performance came in at the high end of internal forecasts.

‘The primary reason it did so well is that the appetite is clearly there for this character and for live-action comedies,’ he said. ‘Additionally, Rowan went all over the world to promote the film and appeared in 11 countries.’

It opens next weekend in 18 more countries, including Brazil, Italy and Mexico, and will be launched in the US at the end of summer – by which time Universal will be able to herald it as an international hit.
