The queen of comedy

Funny Women winner crowned

New comic Suzy Bennett last night triumphed in the final of the Funny Women new act hunt.

The Devon-born 29-year-old, who now lives in Woolwich, impressed judges with a raucous, crowd-pleasing routine covering such topics as You Are What You Eat host Gillian McKeith and DIY Brazilian waxes.

She wins a holiday for two in Cyprus, and the chance to take part in the Funny Women gigs at the Edinburgh Fringe this August.

Diane Morgan, from Bolton, came second at the final in London’s Comedy Store, with Christina Martin coming third.

More than 180 women originally entered the contest, sponsored by insurance firm Sheila’s Wheels. Producer Lynne Parker said: ‘It has been a fantastic competition, with a higher standard than ever before.’

A full review will appear on Chortle later today.
