Thick with praise

Satire lands three more awards nods

The Thick Of It has been nominated for three more awards, this time by the Broadcasting Press Guild.

The political satire has been nominated for best comedy, its star Chris Langham is up for best actor and the writing team have been shortlisted for the writers’ award.

The show is up against Ricky Gervais’s Extras and Love Soup, the BBC One comedy written by David Renwick, for the comedy award.

Extras star Ashley Jensen has also been nominated for best actress, alongside Gillian Anderson and Anna Maxwell Martin (both for Bleak House). Helen Mirren for Elizabeth I and Billie Piper for Doctor Who and Much Ado about Nothing.

In the best actor category, Langham is up against both Doctor Whos

Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, plus Charles Dance for Bleak House

Doctor Who’s Russell T Davies and Bleak House’s Andrew Davies are also shortlisted for the writers’ award, alongside the Thick Of It team.

Judges are also stoking controversy by nominating Stewart Lee and Richard Thompson’s Jerry Springer: The Opera for best single drama.

More than 15,000 Christian campaigners objected when BBC Two aired a recording of the West End show early last year.

It is up against Channel 4’s A Very Social Secretary and The Government Inspector, and BBC One’s Much Ado About Nothing  .

Jonathan Ross  was nominated alongside Jamie Oliver and Ant and Dec for best performer in a non-acting role

The Broadcasting Press Guild Awards will be presented at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on March 31.
