Comic win £47,000 on quiz show

Comic Steve Day is celebrating after winning £47,000 on BBC One’s National Lottery quiz show In It To Win It.

The prize – won on the show broadcast on Saturday – will help him take his show to the Edinburgh Fringe this month; a notoriously costly venture.

Day said: ‘The money has mostly gone on knocking a bit off my mortgage and clearing my credit cards. Makes my trip to Edinburgh a bit easier, too.’

Bu the stand-up, who is deaf, added: ‘Getting a music question was a bit unfair  -but so what?

‘Actually I was more worried  about thinking up a good gag, as I had been for every question, than getting the answer right.

‘I tried to treat the whole thing like doing a gig, and make sure I had a laugh, and if I got on make sure people remember me.

‘People say it's much harder under the spotlight than answering questions at home but I thought the opposite, it helps you concentrate.

‘Host Dale Winton was actually very good, didn't mind being the stooge - but  was not as orange as people generally assume.

‘I didn't watch the show as I was gigging in Leeds and anyway would have been too embarrassed. I assume they cut a few bits out – like when the Outkast  question came up and I said, “you fucking cunts”.’

Day’s art-based Edinburgh show, A Night At The Pictures, opens at Café Royal on Friday.
