New plaques to the lad himself

Two new plaques honouring Tony Hancock have been unveiled in his home town of Birmingham.

One was paid for by city taxpayers, the other by Hancock's brother Roger. They coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first airing of Hancock's Half Hour on BBC radio.

The tributes were installed in the pavement in Old Square, close to an existing bronze statue of Hancock, who was born in the city's Hall Green district in 1924.

Councillor John Alden said: "Tony Hancock was a great and gifted comedian, known to millions of people. It is only right and fitting that Birmingham continues to recognise one of its most talented sons, and these plaques will greatly complement the existing memorial."
