The longest laugh

Marathon gig 'an exceptional success'

A record-breaking attempt for the longest continual comedy show has been hailed a success, after running for 36 hours.

More than 100 comics took part in the One Big Laugh show in Edinburgh's Three Tuns since it started at one minute to midnight on Wednesday night.

Organiser Michael McEwan, who set up the night to raise money for Depression Alliance Scotland said the marathon attempt was "exceptional".

The 21-year-old comic said: “I am absolutely staggered at how successful the event has been. I’m almost speechless and that’s not just down to tiredness

“To see so many people come together in the one place – comedians and audience members alike – for a cause that is so close to my heart, has truly humbled me.

It is not yet known precisely how much money has been raised for the charity, but earlier McEwan said he chose the cause specifically because of his own battle with depression following a sustained period of bullying at school.

He added: “With luck, One Big Laugh will help to promote the illness a little better and challenge people to question the stigma that is so cruelly, albeit unintentionally, associated with it.”

Edinburgh hosted a separate record-breaking marathon last August, when stand-up Mark Watson performed a non-stop 24-hour solo gig, proposing to his girlfriend at its climax.
