Russell Brand

Russell Brand

Date of birth: 04-06-1975

Born in Grays, Essex, to Barbara and Ron, Russell Brand was brought up by his mother. He made his theatrical debut aged 15 in a school production of Bugsy Malone, before going to the Italia Conti stage school and then the Drama Centre in Camden where, at night, he began performing stand-up.

He reached the final of the Hackney Empire New Act Of The Year competition in 2000, and soon after landed two MTV series, Dance Floor Chart and Select. However he became addicted to heroin, which affected his work and was fired after coming to work dressed as Osama Bin Laden immediately after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

In 2002, he fronted the provocative Re:Brand, on UK Play in which he masturbated a gay man and challenged his own father to a boxing match to settle old schools. That year he also appeared in theSteve Coogan vehicle Cruise of the Gods – though he was thrown off the set for bad behaviour and his agent, John Noel, forced him into rehab.

In summer 2004, Brand was given a second chance, hosting E4’s live Big Brother discussion series Efourum. The gamble paid of for Channel 4, and Brand was on the road to becoming an international star.

In October 2008, on a radio show with Jonathan Ross, Brand left filthy messages on the answerphone of Andrew Sachs, which caused huge controversy for the BBC.

And in 2023, an investigation by Channel 4's Dispatches and Times newspapers alleged Brand had sexually abused several women at the peak of his fame – claims the comedian has strongly denied.

Six women, six allegations

Court hears details of the charges against Russell Brand

Russell Brand is a ‘sexual predator’ with an ‘insatiable desire’, prosecutors have alleged during the first day of his trial.

The comedian is in court facing three charges of rape, three of sexual assault and one of indecent assault – all of which he denies – dating from 1999 to 2009.

In her opening statement, prosecuting counsel Riel Karmy-Jones KC, detailed all six charges and told the jury: ‘The women that he was coming across meant nothing to him. They were just a means to an end.

‘Six women, separate women, different allegations, they don't know each other. When you hear them, I have no doubt that you will find their evidence compelling.’

Ms Karmy-Jones detailed the allegations:

• A woman who says Brand raped her in her hotel room after a gig,    ‘pushing’ her onto the bed despite her saying no;

• A woman working in TV who described Brand pulling her into the toilets with a ‘desperate wild-eyed looke’ before she pushed him away;

 • A woman who says Brand pulled her into the toilets in a Soho bar where he forced her to give him oral sex;

• A woman who was working at a radio station, aged 22, when Brand allegedly grabbed her body and kissed her ‘sloppily and aggressively’ until she pushed him off;

• An aspiring comedian who went home with Brand after his gig at the Hammersmith Apollo and had consensual vaginal sex. But afterwards, Brand is said to have penetrated her anally ‘with full force’ and without asking’;

• One woman was working in TV when Brand came in to make an advert and demanded she give him a massage. The comic is alleged to have got on his knees with ‘his face pressed deep into her groin’ until the woman stuck her fingertips into his shoulders.

After a lunch break, the court started hearing more detailed evidence.  The trial is expected to last six weeks.
