Comic guilty of being drunk and disorderly

Monty Burns swore at cop who caught him peeing

Stand-up comic Gregor Burns – who uses the stage name Monty Burns –  has admitted charges of being drunk and disorderly after he swore at a police officer who caught him pissing in a doorway.

The 33-year-old  comedian was given a conditional discharge when he appeared before South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court.

Burns – who was drunk at the time of his arrest – told Ipswich magistrates he had been angry because he had been denied access to a Labour club in the city when he wanted to use the toilet.

A police officer saw Burns, a former soldier, peeing in the doorway at around 12.40am on August 7 in Silent Street.

The comic told the officer he had not been allowed into a club because he was too drunk. But said he was desperate to go to the toilet, so did it in the doorway.

During the conversation Burns swore at the officer and told him to go away.

Burns, representing himself, told the court: ‘I was out of line. I was angry because I wasn’t allowed in to use any of the bathrooms. I didn’t mean to cause any trouble."

In addition to a 12-month conditional discharge, magistrates ordered Burns, from Leeds, to pay costs of £85 and £20 to the victims’ fund.
