Anne Edmonds and Kitty Flanagan unite for new comedy
Set in an ailing Australian theatre
Comedians Anne Edmonds and Kitty Flanagan are to star in a new Australian sitcom about a theatre company on the brink of bankruptcy.
Edmonds wrote the six-part series Bad Company and will play the theatre’s volatile artistic director, whose unchecked whims have sent the company spiralling.
Fisk star Flanagan will play a high-flying corporate executive brought in to clean up Margie's mess.
Filming starts in Melbourne next week, ready to air on Australia’s ABC network next year.
Edmonds said: ‘I’m thrilled to be making an ABC comedy about something so close to my heart - the drama behind the scenes. And getting to make it with Kitty Flanagan? A dream come true.’
ABC’s head of scripted programming, Rachel Okine added: ‘Anne Edmonds and Kitty Flanagan – what a match made in heaven. ABC audiences are going to be delighted to see these two comedic powerhouses going head-to-head in the most unusual of workplace settings.’
Bad Company will be directed by Fisk’s Tom Peterson and made by Guesswork Television, whose credits include Sarah Kendall’s Frayed, comedy-detective series Deadlock and stand-up specials from the likes of Hannah Gadsby, Tom Ballard – and a two-hander with Edmonds and her Welsh husband Lloyd Langford.
Managing director, Kevin Whyte said: ‘In a surprise to no one who follows Australian comedy, Anne Edmonds has created an hilarious world with a new signature character - Margie Argyle. It has been a long time coming and to have Anne joined by Kitty makes it an even bigger thrill.’
The show has been made with the backing of Screen Australia and VicScreen
Screen Australia’s Louise Gough called the show a ‘biting satire’, while VicScreen CEO Caroline Pitcher added: ‘‘The wild global success of Fisk has proven that our distinctive Australian humour can tickle the funny bone of audiences here and overseas. I can't wait to see the shenanigans when Anne and Kitty do battle backstage in this clever new series.’
There is no news yet on any UK broadcast – but Fisk is available on ITVX and Netflix here.
