'He comes up with stuff on the spot that most comedians would kill to have as routines'
Edinburgh Fringe comedian Gareth Mutch picks his comedy favourites
Peep Show
British sitcoms are fantastic and there are so many I want to put in here, but top of the food chain for me is Peep Show.
It’s a level of awkward comedy my wife can’t hack. But, my god, it tickles me on the 20th rewatch. I genuinely went to parties in high school where me and my friend Stephenwould pretend to be Mark and Jeremy.
The wedding episode of Peep Show is the best episode of any sitcom ever period.
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Icons. All the characters are absolutely unredeemable and awful, yet I love them all whilst wanting to see them fail. That’s the direct opposite of Peep Show.
It’s so funny. It’s the worst possible people saying the worst possible things and I’m laughing my guts up every time. It’s a very intelligent show to strike that balance perfectly.
The tightropes they tackle with the concepts and themes is remarkable. And the length of time it’s been running at such a high level, I just have to take my hat off to them. It’s Always Sunny is without doubt the funniest show of all time.
Rory Scovel
Man, this guy is the best. He is so wonderfully silly I often watch him with glee but I'm often like, 'Oh, piss off – how did I not think of this’ as well
I’ve always tried to put performance at the forefront of my own stand-up and I think Rory performs better than anyone else. He is also a phenomenal riffer. He comes up with stuff on the spot that most comedians would kill to have as routines. I kind of wish I was Rory Scovel…
Bo Burnham
He’s a genius. Just across the board. Everything he touches turns to pure gold. His film 8th Grade was outstanding. The sitcom he made for MTV when he was something ridiculous like 19, Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous, is such a fantastic concept and executed hilariously. I still quote it all the time.
And his comedy specials fill me with anger of how good it is. He’s just a pure phenom of talent. I met him in 2013, and he was nothing short of a delight.
Modern Family
Phil Dunphy is the reason this is making my list. He is my favourite sitcom character of all time. He is the GOAT.
But this show is phenomenal often me and my wife go back and rewatch it. It’s very funny, heartwarming and with life lessons aplenty. Intelligent. Warm. Funny. Everyone should watch Modern Family.
