Dan Evans – Original Review

Note: This review is from 2007

Review by Steve Bennett

At his best, Dan Evans is reminiscent of Harry Hill – but with none of the extravagant vaudevillian showmanship. His material is just as silly and playful, but is delivered in low-key conversational style.

In this pared-down context, you might think such contrived jokes could come across as cheesy, but Evans has enough affability to get away with it – at least most of the time. And when the occasional line doesn’t quite hit home, you don’t have to wait long for one that does.

His inspiration comes from daft, semi-surreal timewasting – playing Buckaroo with a cat, or devising pointless games involving crisp packets and road maps of Kent – just the sort of ideas those with too much time on their hands might be tempted to try at home.

Brighton-based Evans is also an experienced compere, and even in his set he’s happy to step out of the constraints of the script and chat with the audience. He’s competent at this, but his forte is definitely the well-constructed, underplayed nonsense of his core material that provides him with a more-than solid act.
