GQ names John Bishop 'comic of the year'

A tight 5: September 3

JOHN BISHOP has been named comedian of the year in the annual GQ Men Of The Year awards. He said: 'I feel like I should thank my wife, even though we've been arguing for three fucking days.' The same ceremony named Tony Blair philanthropist of the year.

SARAH MILLICAN, Jenny Eclair, Susan Calman and Felicity Ward are to be among the contributors to a new online magazine. Standard Issue is set to launch soon.

COMIC Alan Francis is to appear in a Chekov production on the London stage. The stand-up has been cast as Telygin in new version of Uncle Vanya, which begins at the St James Theatre on October 8.

COMEDY is to return to a West London venue after a 17-year absence. The Viaduct in Hanwell used to be home to the weekly Ha Bloody Ha, and played host to the likes of Steve Coogan, Alan Davies, Matt Lucas, Sacha Baron Cohen and Rob Brydon. Now the Bearcat Club is opening a Friday-night club there, starting next week with Milton Jones headlining a night that has already sold out. Listings.

ONE contributor to this year's comedy film festival Cofilmic will receive a £10,000 award to make more videos, thanks to talent incubator Wildseed Studios. Short comedy films, sketches or pilots, running for five to seven minutes, need to be submitted here by noon on September 30.
