Kathy - and Stephen Colbert - win US recording award

Kathy Griffin won the Grammy for best comedy album last night for her stand-up special Calm Down Gurrl.

It is the first time she has won America’s to recording award, despite being nominated six times in a row.

She defeated fellow nominees Craig Ferguson, Ron White, Tog Notaro and Bob Saget to become the award’s third female winner after Whoopi Goldberg and Lily Tomlin.

In her acceptance speech, she thanked Oprah Winfrey, Ryan Seacrest, Paula Abdul and Lindsay Lohan – ‘any of the Lohans really’ – for helping her with her comedy. She also thanked Justin Bieber for giving her his ‘relax juice’.

Stephen Colbert won the separate spoken word category for his album America Again: Re-Becoming the Greatness We Never Weren’t. He beat offerings from Carol Burnett, David Sedaris, Billy Crystal and Pete Seeger.

He previously won the comedy category for A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All! in 2010.
