Matt King Is A Child

Note: This review is from 2014

Review by Steve Bennett

With a weary and unresponsive audience, this was never going to be a great gig.

But gig is the word - not show - for King is basically performing an extended set rather than a fully-formed show.

Not that's a poor set by any means - there's some typically inventive ideas at work, all be they within the confines of the traditional stand-up framework.

His extended zebra routine is particularly amusing, but it still isn't enough to make this show of distinctly limited ambition stand out from the hundreds of shows on offer here

Perhaps a more lively crowd might have energised King into a stronger performance - and possibly an extra star - although it's never going to be any more.

The problem is that although King is a welcome addition to any club's line-up, there are just so many gigs in this city offering three or four stand-ups of similar quality, for the same - or even cheaper - price.

And the routine, solid though it is, just cannot compete.
