Terri Psiakis is Available

Terri Psiakis has nothing to complain about. And that’s really no good premise for a comedy show. That she’s single seems to be the only peg on which to hang this hour-long monologue; but she seems entirely comfortable with her situation, so why even mention it? And that is a question that pops up a lot in this insubstantial fluff.
Available is no more than a collection of weak observations with no follow-ups. She’ll mention, say, an advert that starts ‘is your hair too tired to party?’, say something about what an odd question that is and move on. The point being what, exactly?
And this happens time and time again, from novelty items such as the ‘boyfriend pillow’, which has an arm attached to snuggle up to, to a schoolgirl crush on a teen idol. She merely mentions these things in a jolly, flippant way in the hope that this will be enough. It isn’t.
There’s even a director credited to this simplest of stand-up shows, Corinne Grant, and you have to wonder what she did. Because other than being topped and tailed with an anecdote about a panic attack on the way to a wedding (caused apparently, by the panic that she’s got nothing to panic about), there’s no structure, theme or even point to the show.
Psiakis is a pleasant enough performer, amiable, upbeat and easy-going. But then so are infomercial hosts. Surely a comic should offer more.
