Charlie Cooper to explore ‘gloriously bonkers’ rural myths
This Country star Charlie Cooper is to front a BBC show looking at Britain’s ‘gloriously bonkers’ rural myths.
Provisionally titled Charlie Cooper’s Local Legends, the three-part ‘funny factual’ series will investigate the likes of crop circles and UFOs in Wiltshire and roaming ghost dogs in East Anglia.
Cooper, who co-created This Country with his older sister Daisy-May, said: ‘I’m really excited about this new series, as I’ve always been fascinated by local legends, myth and folklore. As I see it, my mission is to explore our ancient world, seek out mythical creatures and boldly go where no TV presenter has gone before.’
He will tour the UK in his camper to explore spooky small-town goings on, uncovering eye-witness accounts as well as staging his own experiments, while exploring how the legends have come to define the places and people they originate from.
The series is being made for BBC Three by Naked West, whose managing director Tom O’Brien said the series was ‘ripe with character, kookiness and the uncanny’. He added: ‘British folktales are finding new life once again with a real explosion of interest, so it’s a great time to unearth their origins, quirks and meaning for the present-day.’
Nasfim Haque, head of content for BBC Three added: ’It is super thrilling and scary in equal measure to see what mysteries and magic Charlie uncovers on his adventures. We are so pleased to be working with him on his factual debut at the BBC and we are sure that audiences will be captivated by everything he discovers.’
No broadcast date has yet been announced.
