Comic aims to visit 18 Birminghams in North America

Joe Lycett is to front a new travel TV series in which he attempts to visit all the Birminghams in North America.

The comic will start in his hometown’s namesake in the Saskatchewan province of Canada, then travel down down the East Coast, through the Midwest and into the Deep South.

He hopes to visit 18 towns of the same name over the three episodes of Joe Lycett's United States Of Birmingham – inviting some of the people he meets to an International Day of Birmingham hosted in the UK’s second city.

The show will be shot this summer to air on Sky Max next year.

Lycett joked: ‘I am delighted to be making this show for Sky which will finally secure me enough money to move to London.’

This will be the comic’s second travel series after Channel 4’s Travel Man. He also hosts Late Night Lycett and consumer watchdog show Joe Lycett's Got Your Back for the broadcaster – making it something of a coup for Sky to prise him away.

Earlier this month, Lycett announced that he was publishing an art book, Joe Lycett's Art Hole, in September, featuring portraits of celebrities such as Harry Styles, Robert Peston, Nadine Dorries and Elaine Paige. It can be ordered here.

Thanks for reading. If you find Chortle’s coverage of the comedy scene useful or interesting, please consider supporting us with a monthly or one-off ko-fi donation.
Any money you contribute will directly fund more reviews, interviews and features – the sort of in-depth coverage that is increasingly difficult to fund from ever-squeezed advertising income, but which we think the UK’s vibrant comedy scene deserves.
