BBC rushes out a new episode of Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience

As comic highlights the dedication of care workers

A new episode of Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience has been rushed on to the schedules in honour of Britain’s care workers.

The comic spent a few days working in a care home in Barry for the ninth series of his BBC Wales last year.

Although the new series had not yet officially been announced, the BBC has rushed to put this episode on screens this week as the dedication of care workers comes to the fore during the coronavirus pandemic.

Gilbert, 51, said: ‘I have been wanting to film a Work Experience episode as a carer for years - and before the Covid-19 outbreak, our little team made it happen.

‘It was not due to be on TV for a while, as part of the next series… but the timing feels right, right now.

‘It was very emotional when we filmed it. Not least because my dad is in a fantastic care home, and my mother died of Alzheimer’s a few years ago.

‘During filming, I was privileged enough to spend a few days helping the staff at a home in Barry, South Wales. When we filmed it last year, I felt that carers were one of the least valued and most valuable members of our society; that is no longer in question. I hope you enjoy the programme.

The show will now air at 9.30pm tomorrow on BBC Wales, then be available nationwide on BBC iPlayer afterwards.

The broadcaster said the episode was being screened 'as a tribute to those who are looking after our loved ones'.

Rhod Gilbert's Work Experience started in 2010 and his jobs over the 31 episodes have included bin man, zookeeper, drag artist, RAF fighter pilot and classical musician.
